Autodesk provides three different versions of the Autodesk MapGuide® Viewer:
- The ActiveX Control version of the Autodesk MapGuide Viewer is designed
for use with Microsoft® Internet Explorer®. This version
is for the Microsoft Windows platforms only.
- The Plug-In version of the Autodesk MapGuide Viewer is designed for use
with Netscape® Navigator®. This version is for the Microsoft
Windows® platforms only.
- The Java Edition version of the Autodesk MapGuide
Viewer is designed for use with other platforms including Macintosh® and Sun®
Solaris®, as well as the Microsoft Windows platforms.
Before You Install
- If you will be installing the ActiveX Control or the Plug-In Viewer, you must install Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator before installing Autodesk MapGuide Viewer.
- If you are installing the Java Edition of Autodesk
MapGuide Viewer, be sure to uninstall any previous versions first.
To Install the Viewer
1. Do one of the following:
- From the Web site: If you downloaded the Viewer from the Autodesk
MapGuide Web site, double-click the downloaded file to run the self-extracting
setup program. The file will be named either MGControl60.EXE (ActiveX Control) or
MGPlugin60.EXE (Netscape Plug-In). If you downloaded the Java Edition from the Web
site, you should have completed the download and installation in one step.
- From the CD: If you have the Autodesk MapGuide CD,
insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. (If the installer screen does not start automatically, double-click the setup.exe file on the CD.) When the installer screen appears, click Autodesk MapGuide Viewer Products, and then select the desired Viewer:
- To install the Viewer for Microsoft Internet Explorer, select Viewer ActiveX Control.
- To install the Viewer for Netscape Navigator,
select Viewer Plug-In.
- To install the Java Edition Viewer, select Installing Java Edition (JAR File), which opens a Web page that describes how to set up the Java Edition for download from the Web server.
- To set up automatic installation of the ActiveX Control, select Installing ActiveX Control (CAB File), which opens a Web page that describes how to set up automatic installation.
2. Follow the instructions in the installer. When finished, restart your browser.
You are now ready to access maps published by Autodesk MapGuide. If you have
problems viewing a map, make sure the proxy access of your Web browser is configured
properly (contact your system administrator for details).
On some operating systems, in particular the Japanese OS, the Java Viewer file
install may appear to fail. You may see a blank MapGuide window at the end of
install, and when you hold the cursor over the window the status bar reads "load:
com.autodesk.mgjava.MGMapApplet can't be instantiated." However, the installation
has in fact succeeded and the Java Viewer will run.
After installing the Java Edition Viewer, you may notice that in the Downloaded Program Files folder, the status column for the Autodesk MapGuide Viewer, Java Edition shows "Damaged". This is caused by a problem with Internet Explorer. After you reboot the machine, the Java Edition will be shown as Installed.
When you install Autodesk MapGuide Author, Autodesk MapGuide Symbol Manager is also installed.
Note If you installed beta copies of Autodesk MapGuide Author or Symbol Manager, you must uninstall them prior to installing the shipping version of Release 6.
To install Autodesk MapGuide Author and Symbol Manager
- Insert the Autodesk MapGuide CD into the CD-ROM drive.
The installation screen displays automatically. (If it does not display, double-click the setup.exe file on the CD.)
- Select Autodesk MapGuide Author Products.
- Select Autodesk MapGuide Author, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
MGUserGuide.pdf is an online version of the printed manual, the Autodesk
MapGuide User's Guide, and is installed separately. See section 7, Autodesk
MapGuide Documentation for installation information.
MGUserGuide.pdf is an Adobe® Acrobat® file. If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat
Reader, you can install the latest version, Acrobat Reader 5.0, from the Autodesk
MapGuide CD. If you are installing Adobe Acrobat Reader on the Microsoft Windows
2000 operating system, you will need to log on as an Administrator in order to
install the program.
If you are authoring maps for display with either the Java Edition Viewer or LiteView, and you are using TrueType fonts as symbols, be sure to select the Add By Rendering TrueType Fonts As Graphics option when you create the symbol using Symbol Manager. If you do not select this option, the TrueType fonts will be displayed at a very small size in the Java Edition Viewer and LiteView.
To install Autodesk MapGuide Server
- Insert the Autodesk MapGuide CD into the CD-ROM drive.
The installation screen displays automatically. (If it does not display, double-click the setup.exe file on the CD.)
- Select Autodesk MapGuide Server Products.
- Select Autodesk MapGuide Server, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Following are notes and tips for using Autodesk MapGuide Server Release 6.
3.2.1 Documentation
MGUserGuide.pdf is an online version of the printed manual, the Autodesk
MapGuide User's Guide. It is installed separately. See section 7, Autodesk
MapGuide Documentation for installation information.
MGUserGuide.pdf is an Adobe Acrobat file. If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat
Reader, you can install the latest version, Acrobat Reader 5.0, from the Autodesk
MapGuide CD. If you are installing Adobe Acrobat Reader on the Microsoft Windows
2000 operating system, you will need to log on as an Administrator in order
to install the program.
If you are upgrading Autodesk MapGuide Server, and you still have the previous version
on your computer, be sure to install the new version in a different directory.
You must uninstall Autodesk MapGuide for VISION* Server before installing
Autodesk MapGuide Release 6 Server.
Autodesk MapGuide Server requires a minimum of 85 MB of free hard disk space. For more information about
the system requirements for Autodesk MapGuide Server, refer to the Autodesk MapGuide User's Guide.
Autodesk MapGuide Server Release 6 has the following requirements for installation:
- If you are installing Autodesk MapGuide products on
the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system, you will need to log on as an
Administrator in order to install programs, write to registries, or modify
system files. Please make sure you have the proper privileges before you begin
to install products.
- You must have Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.5 or
later, or the installation will direct you to upgrade your software. MDAC
2.5 is provided on the Autodesk MapGuide Release 6 CD. After you upgrade,
you will need to reboot your computer.
Note If you install or upgrade to Microsoft Data Access Components
version 2.5, which is supplied on the Autodesk MapGuide CD, and you are
also running AutoCAD Map 2000 on the same machine, you may encounter ASI
errors in AutoCAD Map 2000, because MDAC 2.5 overwrites some files that
AutoCAD Map 2000 uses. If you upgrade to Autodesk Map Release 5 you will no longer
encounter these errors.
- Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) must be present on your
computer. MSI is included with Microsoft Windows 2000. If you do not have MSI on your computer, the installer will
install the MSI software for you. You will then need to restart your computer and manually restart the Autodesk MapGuide Server installation.
- When you install MapGuide Server, MIME types for the MLF, MDF, and MWF file formats are created in the default Internet Information Server (IIS) properties. However, when information is requested from Autodesk MapGuide Author or from the Plug-In Viewer, IIS will not return the appropriate MIME type header until you take one of the following actions:
Reboot your computer
or
In IIS admin, add the following three MIME types to the Web Server (not the IIS Master) file types:
- mdf application/x-mdf
- mlf application/x-mlf
- mwf application/x-mwf
You cannot use the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel to update or repair your Autodesk MapGuide Server installation. If you try to do this, you will receive a series of error messages. To update or repair your Autodesk MapGuide Server installation, run the MGServer60.EXE file from the Server folder on the Autodesk MapGuide CD.
There is a known problem with Microsoft Windows NT 4 with Service Pack 6a installed. In some cases, the Autodesk MapGuide Release 6 Server installer may fail to properly recognize the installed operating system service pack version. The Autodesk MapGuide Server installation may fail with a message indicating that "Autodesk MapGuide Server requires Microsoft Windows NT4 SP4 or higher." Please see Microsoft Knowledgebase article ID number Q293322 at support.microsoft.com. The article explains how to obtain the Microsoft hotfix to address this problem.
When a request is made to the Autodesk MapGuide Server for an Autodesk DWG layer, the DWG data file is locked to any application attempting to access it, including another Autodesk MapGuide Server. In general, you should make edits to your DWG files prior to publishing them with Autodesk MapGuide. If you need to update a DWG file that you have already set up as an Autodesk MapGuide data source, do the following:
- In Autodesk MapGuide Server Admin, choose Edit > Properties.
- Click the Data Sources tab.
- Clear the Available check box next to the DWG data source you need to edit.
After you edit and save your DWG file, be sure to put the data source back online by selecting the Available check box in the Autodesk MapGuide Server Admin Data Sources tab.
Due to a known issue with the MrSID decompression SDK, Autodesk MapGuide Server may eventually fail if an invalid MrSID image file is used. Autodesk MapGuide Server recognizes a file as being a MrSID format file if the first four characters in the file are "msid." The exact cause of the failure is an object handle resource leak.
